Rwenzori Mountains National Park: Home to Africa’s third-highest peak
In 1994, the Rwenzori Mountains National Park was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site because it protects Africa’s third-highest mountain – Margherita Peak on Mount Stanley at 5,109 metres, and in 2008, a Ramsar convention site due to its exceptional and thriving ecosystems. Often described as the “Mountains of the Moon” as they were called by the ancient Greek geographer Ptolemy, who believed that the mountains’ snow-capped peaks were the source of the River Nile.

The Climbing Experience
On average, it takes around 8 days to summit Magherita peak via three major trails: the Central Circuit trail, the Kilembe trail, and the Bukurungu trail. The mountain is one of the only three places on the continent with permanent glaciers, and therefore, climbing the Rwenzoris is a demanding adventure that requires a certain level of fitness and a certain amount of time to conquer its highest peak. The park contains a significant portion of geographical features such as fast-flowing rivers, lakes, and spectacular waterfalls. The striking alpine scenery is complemented by giant heathers, groundsels, lobelias, and other endemic plants found nowhere else on Earth. Wildlife sightings include the three-horned chameleon, forest elephants, L’Hoest’s monkeys, and Rwenzori black-fronted duikers. The park is also a bird haven for those seeking high-altitude bird species.
Cultural Experiences
The foothills of the Rwenzori mountains are inhabited by one major tribe, the Bakonjo communities, which offer trekkers immersive cultural experiences, including guided hikes through heritage trails, cooking demonstrations of traditional dishes, local arts and crafts, and mountain homestead visits.

How to Get There
The Rwenzori Mountains are located in western Uganda near Kasese. It can be accessed via two significant routes: the Northern route via Mubende-Forta Portal to Kasese and the southern route via Mbarara-Bushenyi, approximately 300km and 350km respectively. Domestic flights to Kasese airstrip are available for approximately 90 to 120 minutes, followed by a 40-minute drive to the park headquarters.
When to Go
The dry seasons (June-September and December-February) offer the best conditions for climbing. However, the rainy seasons make trails extremely challenging and increase the risk of landslides. Rwenzori Mountain National Park is for resilient hikers and climbers seeking serious adventure. Conquering the summit is demanding but rewarding, with some of Africa’s most spectacular high-altitude scenery.
