Why Murchison Falls Shouldn’t Be Missed on Your Bucket List
In the far northwestern part of Uganda lies Uganda’s largest and oldest protected area, Murchison Falls National Park, locally known as Kabalega National Park. It is home to the world’s most powerful waterfall, from which the park derives its name. Here, the Victoria Nile squeezes through a narrow seven-meter gorge before plunging into a thundering pool below at an astonishing 300 cubic meters per second.
The Falls Experience
The falls are the park’s undisputed centerpiece. Visitors can experience them from two perspectives:
- A 3-hour boat cruise to the bottom of the falls. As you sail your way through, you will get rewarding views of a variety of wildlife ranging from aquatic animals to terrestrial animals as they make their way up to the shores to drink water. Different bird species, including the African fish eagle, Goliath heron, African Jacana, and so many more, can also be spotted.
- Hiking to the top for breathtaking panoramic views. Here, visitors experience a heavy spray or even a shower from the ferocious falls. Both experiences are unforgettable, offering dramatically different perspectives of this natural wonder.
Wildlife Viewing
During morning and evening game drives, the park rewards you with amazing views of impressive wildlife populations, including elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, hippos, crocodiles, lions, and antelopes. The Nile Delta area, where the river empties into Lake Albert, is particularly rich for bird watching, with the prehistoric shoebill stork among the prize sightings.
How to Get There
The park is approximately 304 km away from Kampala, and it takes a 4- to 6-hour drive from Kampala via Masindi, along generally good roads. The journey passes through Luwero district, ‘Uganda’s fruit basket’, and Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, where visitors can stop and do rhino tracking on foot. This gives the safari a complete Uganda Big Five experience. However, Charter flights of approximately 60 to 75 minutes to Pakuba or Chobe airstrips from Entebbe are also available.
When to Go
The dry seasons (June-September and December-February) are ideal, but wildlife viewing is good all year round. During the wet season, the park’s landscapes transform into lush green, and wildlife becomes particularly active. Murchison Falls combines a classic Savannah safari with one of Africa’s most extraordinary waterfalls, making it a must-visit for first-time and returning safari-goers alike.
