Lake Mburo National Park: Uganda’s Most Accessible Safari
Driving to Lake Mburo National Park takes just 3-5 hours from Kampala or Entebbe, making it the nearest park to those points. It is also Uganda’s smallest savannah park, covering between 260 and 370 square kilometers and known as a ‘Compact gem’.

Unique Safari Experiences
Lake Mburo offers unique activities found in no other park in Uganda, such as walking safaris that bring visitors up close to zebras, impalas, giraffes, warthogs, and buffaloes. Guided by an armed ranger, the activity follows tracks, observes animal behaviour, takes photographs with animals as backdrops, and appreciates nature.

Horseback riding and mountain biking are also signature experiences; they offer an extraordinary perspective as riders canter among zebras, giraffes, and antelopes through rolling Savannah. Boat cruises on the lake offer spectacular views of aquatic life, bringing you close to hippos, Nile crocodiles, various fish species, and birds. Night game drives in the park reveal nocturnal wildlife, including leopards, hyenas, bush babies, porcupines, and civets.
Wildlife and Birdlife
Although Lake Mburo lacks elephants and lions, it is home to Uganda’s large zebra population. It is also the only place where you can spot impalas. Other wildlife in the park includes: giraffes, buffalo, elands, and over 300 bird species.
Cultural Experiences

A visit to the Ankole Cow Conservation Area (ACCA), located inside the park, provides deep insight into the history of the Ankole kingdom. The initiative works with local communities to manage genetics, promote cultural activities such as milking, ghee-making process, and the pastoralist way of life that shaped this landscape. Village walks to local communities around the park offer an intimate look into the lives of Bahima; they provide an insight into how communities co-exist with the surrounding wildlife.
How to Get There
Lake Mburo is conveniently located in Kiruhura district, just off the main Kampala-Mbarara highway, 30km east of Mbarara and 240km west of Kampala, and it takes about a 3-5 hour drive, thus making it the most accessible park for a weekend gateway. The park is also accessed through three major gates: Sanga gate, which is the main gate, Nshara gate, and Kyanyanshara gate.

When to Go
Just like most parks, Lake Mburo National Park is accessible all year-round. The dry seasons (June-September and December-February) offer clearer and better wildlife viewing.
For travellers who are short on time, families with children, and those en route to South Western Uganda tourist destinations, Lake Mburo National Park is the best option, and its range of activities makes it appealing for those seeking active safari experiences.
