Nyungwe Forest National Park

Stretching over 1,020 square kilometers, Nyungwe Forest National Park is one of Africa’s oldest and largest montane rainforests. A biodiversity hotspot, it is home to 13 primate species—including chimpanzees and colobus monkeys—and over 300 bird species, making it a paradise for birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts.

The park is famous for its exhilarating canopy walkway, offering a unique perspective above the forest, as well as an extensive network of hiking trails through lush, ancient landscapes. Nyungwe provides some of the best primate trekking experiences in East Africa.

Best time to visit: June to September and December to February for easier hiking and better wildlife visibility.
